"FESE" | Wang Jinnan: Towards the Construction of a Beautiful China with Harmony between Humans and Nature

Recently, the research team led by Academician Wang Jinnan from CAEP published a viewpoint paper titled "Towards the Construction of a Beautiful China with Harmony between Humans and Nature" in the journal FESE (Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering). The paper systematically summarizes the progress and main experiences in the construction of a beautiful China, analyzes the main challenges faced in comprehensively advancing the construction of a beautiful China in the future, proposes five policy recommendations for comprehensively promoting the construction of a beautiful China, and emphasizes the importance of top-level design, overall coordination, and the safeguard system in the construction of a beautiful China.

China's construction of ecological civilization has undergone historic, transformative, and comprehensive changes, and significant strides have been made in the construction of a beautiful China. The article focuses on the practice of building a beautiful China, elucidating from a domestic perspective how the construction of a beautiful China has significantly contributed to the achievements of China's ecological civilization construction. It also discusses from an international perspective how the construction of a beautiful China has led the green trend of sustainable development around the world.

The article points out that although significant achievements have been made in the construction of a beautiful China, there are still four main challenges: a considerable gap between the current environmental quality and the goals of building a beautiful China, prominent contradictions in green and low-carbon development, long-term and arduous tasks in ecological protection and restoration, and the current layout, structure, and quality of environmental safety and health not being able to meet the development needs of prioritizing ecological and environmental livelihood. It calls for persistent efforts with greater intensity to advance the construction of a beautiful China. Moreover, it proposes four strategic opportunities provided by the construction of a beautiful China: it helps to enhance international green competitiveness, provides a deeper level of governance orientation for ensuring environmental health for the population, injects strong development momentum through technological innovation, and offers a Chinese solution for other countries to move towards sustainable development.

To achieve the goals of building a beautiful China, the article proposes the five objectives and pathways, which include:Planning the blueprint for the construction of a beautiful China throughout the entire process.Forming the green momentum of a beautiful China across all fields.Promoting the quality improvement of a beautiful China through all elements.Advancing the construction of the carrier of a beautiful China in all regions.Building a comprehensive safeguard system for a beautiful China. It is worth emphasizing that the construction of a beautiful China requires a long-term process of construction. It necessitates a systematic integration that combines macro and micro perspectives, coordinates short-term and long-term goals, and resonates in unison between the national and local levels. This requires the collective effort of the entire society to jointly consolidate the ecological foundation for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
