Spotlight on COP16 | "China Pavilion" Event III: China Green Development's Biodiversity Conservation Practices Enter COP16

 

From October 21 to November 1, the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity was held in Colombia. The theme of this conference was "Living in Harmony with Nature." Heads of state, senior officials, experts, and scholars from 196 countries around the world, along with representatives from social organizations, attended the conference, which featured over 300 side events in various forms to discuss the promotion of global biodiversity conservation and the achievement of sustainable development goals. China Green Development Investment Group participated in hosting a series of "China Pavilion" events and co-hosted a side event titled "Mainstreaming Biodiversity Supports Building a Beautiful China."

 

Minister of Ecology and Environment, Huang Runqiu, attended and addressed the side event "Mainstreaming Biodiversity Supports Building a Beautiful China." He stated that the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity cannot be separated from the strong support of all sectors of society. It is necessary to encourage enterprises, the public, social organizations, and other forces to participate in biodiversity conservation, identify priority paths for mainstreaming, and strive to enhance the governance capacity and level of biodiversity, forming a new pattern of joint conservation, management, and sharing of biodiversity by the entire population.

The representative from China Green Development Investment Group delivered a keynote speech at the side event, introducing the company's recent practices in biodiversity conservation and the achievements in becoming a leader in this field, and voicing the international commitment of Chinese enterprises in the area of biodiversity protection.

During the 2023 World Earth Day, China Green Development Investment Group (CGDG) released the "Biodiversity Leading Enterprise Planning Outline," establishing a "1166" strategy for biodiversity conservation. CGDG solemnly issued the first-ever action declaration for leading enterprises in biodiversity protection, initiating pilot construction for biodiversity conservation in three industries: green energy, happiness industry, and low-carbon cities, promoting biodiversity conservation across the entire enterprise, all business formats, and all scenarios.

 

The Xinjiang Nilek Wind and Photovoltaic Integrated Project constructed by CGDG adhered to green construction practices during its construction phase, employing eco-friendly designs such as high supports and large spacing to create migration corridors for wildlife. After completion of the construction, the original vegetation and land forms were promptly restored, and biodiversity monitoring and protection efforts were carried out. By promoting the "grazing and photovoltaic complementary" approach, the project achieved efficient land resource utilization while also taking into account the protection of the ecological environment.

In the Thousand Islands Lake scenic area, by planning biodiversity experience routes, constructing habitat restoration demonstration bases, and showcasing species for habitat restoration in Thousand Islands Lake, a biodiversity conservation area integrating natural display, ecological experience, and educational research has been created. This fully demonstrates the project's green ecological concept and achievements in biodiversity conservation, and has been selected as one of the United Nations' "Biodiversity 100+ Global Typical Cases".

In the Star City Riverside Community of Chongqing, the optimization and adjustment of rain garden plants are carried out, with appropriate supplementation of local tree species to fully leverage the functions of the sponge city system, including rain gardens, bio-retention ponds, and permeable paving. Ecological environment monitoring and display screens, artificial bird nests, insect hotels, and other biodiversity-friendly facilities are set up to create a harmonious ecological neighborhood atmosphere.

At the same time, China Green Development Investment Group has taken the lead in creating world-class standards for biodiversity protection enterprises, participating in the research and compilation of 1 comprehensive evaluation standard and 3 industry action guidelines. Among them, the "Technical Guidelines for Evaluating Biodiversity Leading Enterprises" has become China's first group standard to guide enterprises in carrying out biodiversity actions, providing a standard reference for further strengthening biodiversity systems and capacity building, deepening biodiversity protection practices, and leading green high-quality development with high-level ecological protection.

 

Recently, the book "Business Biodiversity Conservation Action and CGDG Practices" has been officially published. The book systematically summarizes the company's experience and achievements in biodiversity protection, explores effective models for biodiversity protection, and provides valuable references for corporate biodiversity protection actions from aspects such as target indicator systems and action management models.
