Implementing Green Engineering Design Education to Consolidate the Green Foundation of Beautiful China
On April 28, 2024, the World Green Design Forum, hosted by the World Green Design Organization and as one of the parallel forums of the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum, was inaugurated with great fanfare in the Zhongguancun National Innovation Demonstration Zone. Academician Wang Jinnan, a standing committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Deputy Director of the Population Resources Environment Committee, Honorary President of CAEP, Chairman of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, attended and delivered a keynote speech titled "Implementing Green Engineering Design Education to Consolidate the Green Foundation of Beautiful China."

Wang Jinnan pointed out that the transition to a green and low-carbon economy is the fundamental path to building a beautiful China. Green engineering design, as an internal tool for protecting the ecological environment and addressing climate change, not only helps to reduce pollution and support environmental friendliness but also focuses on minimizing the entire life cycle impact and promoting sustainable recycling development for society as a whole. It is an important means to consolidate the green foundation of a beautiful China and an effective way to achieve sustainable development goals. Wang emphasized that to establish a green engineering design system, it is necessary to first promote the reform of engineering education. By carrying out general education in green engineering design, we can make up for the shortcomings in the discipline of China's higher education system, popularize the concept of green engineering design, cultivate professional talents in green design who are interdisciplinary and cross-professional, and promote major projects, long-life projects, and infrastructure projects to achieve energy saving, consumption reduction, water conservation, emission reduction, and low carbon. He also proposed suggestions for comprehensively promoting the establishment of general education in green engineering design in engineering schools from four aspects: fully recognizing the role of green engineering design in promoting the construction of a beautiful China, accelerating the compilation of general textbooks for green engineering design, establishing and improving the system of technical standards and specifications for green engineering design, and promoting the pilot education of green engineering design courses in colleges and universities through departmental collaboration.
The theme of this forum was "Promoting the Development of Green Productive Forces through Green Design International Standards." Top experts, industry organizations, and representatives of leading enterprises from around the world shared their research results and best practices in the construction of green design international standards and green development in various fields. The meeting also held the launch ceremony for the compilation of green design international standards, the "World Green Design Capital (Demonstration Zone)" initiative and promotion, and the "Green Leaf Home" public welfare project initiative.
